Season 2026

Opera 5’s Toronto Opera Festival returns in June 2026 with a bold celebration of opera in all its forms. This year’s festival features a double bill of two opera favourites: Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi with a stellar cast of Canadian artists—alongside Opera 5’s Portfolio Artist Internship Program, which champions the next generation of talent.

The Festival also unveils the world premiere of Parḗlios, a groundbreaking new Canadian opera by Cecilia Livingston and Duncan McFarlane that blends choir, soloists, and percussion ensemble, movement, and installation to explore themes of climate, migration, and the North.

Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi

Join Opera 5 for a fresh and intimate double bill of Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Gianni Schicchi, presented with a new chamber reduction by Music Director Evan Mitchell. Directed by Jessica Derventzis, this pairing brings together some of Canada’s most celebrated opera artists alongside Opera 5’s Portfolio Artist Interns.

This production shines a light on the emotional range of Puccini’s work: from the quiet, aching spirituality of Suor Angelica to the sharp wit and joyful chaos of Gianni Schicchi. By weaving emerging voices with seasoned performers in an intimate musical setting, Opera 5 offers a moving, funny, and deeply human evening that highlights the power of ensemble storytelling and incredible Canadian opera talent.

Parḗlios

Discover the world premiere of Parḗlios, a bold new Canadian opera by Cecilia Livingston and Duncan McFarlane. Blending opera, installation, and oratorio, Parḗlios explores themes of migration, climate change, and the North through an immersive mix of music, movement, and visual storytelling. With percussion, choir, and contemporary dance woven into its fabric, the work creates a vivid, transformative experience that pushes the boundaries of the operatic form.

Threepenny Submarine

Are you a fan of opera, classic hits, puppets, and children’s shows? Then wowza, do we have the digital series for you! We’ve teamed up with Gazelle Automations to share the story of junior officers, Iona the cockatiel and Lydian the vixen, as they explore the deep sea in Threepenny Submarine near the mysterious Salieri Sector. After a scare, they accidentally come across a strange sea creature who sounds like a flute, and their adventure begins!
