Michal Aloni

Michal Aloni is a mezzo-soprano and emerging stage director working across opera and interdisciplinary performance. Born in Tel Aviv, she discovered opera in her mid-twenties, beginning a journey that led her to live, study, and work internationally before making Canada her home.

As a singer, Michal’s repertoire spans Baroque to contemporary works, with recent and upcoming solo and chorus engagements with Chants Libres, People Watching, Cultureland Collective, Opera 5, Opéra de Montréal, and the Canadian Opera Company.

As a director, Michal is interested in using improvisation and movement to develop character and storytelling in opera, shaping performance through space, relationships, and dramatic structure. Recent projects include The Medium (Opera McGill) and The Scholars (Arcady Ensemble). She has directed scenes and concerts at McGill University and Western University, and assisted on select productions at both institutions, as well as at Opéra de Montréal (in collaboration with the Association for Opera in Canada). She recently completed a short observership with the Jette Parker Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden on Barrie Kosky’s new production of Siegfried.

Michal is excited to be a 2026–2027 Stage Director in Residence with Vancouver Opera’s Yulanda M. Faris Young Artist Program, assisting on season productions and staging the Young Artist show; and a 2026 Portfolio Artist Intern with Opera 5, covering La Zia Principessa and singing La Badessa in Suor Angelica, while also assisting on the world premiere of Parḗlios by Cecilia Livingston. She holds a Diploma in Opera Stage Direction from McGill University and voice performance degrees from the University of Western Ontario and the Jerusalem Academy of Music, and is grateful for support from institutions and foundations, including the Canada Council, Opera America, and the Jenny Panitch Beckow Memorial Fund.
