Michal Aloni

Michal Aloni is a mezzo-soprano, actress, and stage director noted for her dramatic sensitivity and interdisciplinary approach to opera. Born in Tel Aviv, Michal began studying piano at an early age. She discovered her passion for opera in her mid-twenties, beginning a journey that led her to live, work, and perform around the world before making Canada her home.

As a singer, Michal’s repertoire spans Baroque to contemporary works. Notable roles include Sesto (La clemenza di Tito, COSA Canada), Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro, UWOOpera), Ramiro (La finta giardiniera, UWOOpera), Ottavia (L’incoronazione di Poppea, Barefoot Opera, UK), Diana (La Calisto, Ensemble OrQuesta, UK), Dorabella (Così fan tutte, Dublin Opera Studio), and Dorothée (Cendrillon, IVAI Tel Aviv). She has premiered new works with Chants Libres at Opera’Actuel and recorded excerpts for PLAY DEAD, a touring contemporary circus production by People Watching. Michal has been a member of the Canadian Opera Company Chorus since 2022 and looks forward to presenting a solo recital as part of the COC’s RBA Concert Series this winter.

As a director, she is particularly interested in improvisation and movement to deepen character and narrative. Recent and upcoming engagements include directing The Medium (Opera McGill), The Scholars (Arcady Ensemble), and various scenes for Opera McGill and UWOOpera galas and showcases. She has assisted on productions at Opera McGill, UWOOpera, and Opéra de Montréal (in collaboration with the Association-for-Opera-in-Canada). This winter, she will observe Barrie Kosky’s Siegfried at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as a 2026 Jette Parker Artists Programme Observership recipient.

Michal is completing a Diploma in Stage Directing at McGill University and holds voice performance degrees from the University of Western Ontario and the Jerusalem Academy of Music. She is grateful for support from multiple foundations and competitions, including the Canada Council for the Arts, Opera America, the Jenny Panitch Beckow Memorial Fund, the London Music Scholarship Foundation and the Maritsa Brookes Competition.
